We Welcome Your Questions
These are some of the most common questions people ask when they first encounter Jehovah's Witnesses or consider visiting our congregation. If your question isn't answered here, please contact us directly.
Jehovah's Witnesses are a Christian religious denomination who base their beliefs and practices entirely on the Bible. The name reflects our belief in using God's personal name — Jehovah — as revealed in the original scriptures. We are part of a worldwide community of more than 8 million members in over 240 countries, united by shared beliefs and a commitment to the Bible's teachings. In Canada alone, there are tens of thousands of Witnesses active in hundreds of congregations from coast to coast.
Absolutely not. All of our meetings at the Kingdom Hall are open to the public — no membership, registration, or invitation required. You are welcome to simply walk in and take a seat. Members of our congregation will greet you warmly and make you feel at home. There is no pressure to participate, no obligation to return, and no collection will be taken.
No — all of our meetings, programs, and publications are completely free of charge. We do not take offerings or collections, and we never ask visitors for money. Our congregation's expenses are covered entirely by voluntary contributions from our own baptized members. Bible study guides, magazines, books, and other educational materials are offered as a gift to anyone who wants them.
We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God — written by humans but guided by God's spirit. We accept the full 66 books of the Bible as accurate and authoritative. Our beliefs and practices are based entirely on what the Bible says, rather than on human tradition, creeds, or philosophical interpretation. We use the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures, which is a faithful, accurate, and highly readable modern English translation made directly from the original Hebrew and Greek texts.
No — we do not celebrate Christmas, Easter, birthdays, or most other traditional holidays. Our decision is based on Biblical research showing that these celebrations have origins unrelated to the Bible and that the Bible itself does not instruct Christians to observe them. We respect that others make different choices, and we do not pressure anyone else regarding these practices. The one observance we do hold is the annual Memorial of Christ's Death, which Jesus himself commanded his followers to observe.
A Kingdom Hall is the meeting place used by a congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses for their weekly meetings and congregation activities. The name reflects our focus on God's Kingdom — a central theme in the Bible's message. Our Kingdom Hall in Corner Brook is located at 91 Carberry's Road and is a clean, welcoming, accessible facility. Unlike many traditional religious buildings, Kingdom Halls are intentionally simple and functional, keeping the focus on Bible education rather than elaborate architecture.
A free home Bible study involves a trained member of our congregation meeting with you — at your home, at our Kingdom Hall, or wherever is most comfortable — to study the Bible together using one of our easy-to-understand study guides. Sessions typically last about 30-45 minutes and are scheduled at a day and time that works for you. There is absolutely no obligation to continue, no pressure to join our congregation, and no cost of any kind. The study proceeds at your pace and focuses on the questions and topics you are most interested in.
Door-to-door ministry is a Biblical practice traced to the first-century Christians who taught "publicly and from house to house" (Acts 20:20). We believe the Bible's message of hope is important enough to bring to people personally — not to impose our views, but to offer a conversation and the opportunity to receive free Bible literature. We always respect the wishes of householders: if someone asks us not to return, we honour that request completely. Our visits are intended to be a brief, respectful opportunity — nothing more.
Yes. The Corner Brook Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses is a registered Canadian charity with Business Number 764282711RR0001. Our congregation operates transparently in accordance with Canadian charitable law and is accountable to the Canada Revenue Agency. All voluntary contributions made by congregation members are used to cover the costs of our meetings, publications, and Kingdom Hall maintenance.
God's Kingdom is a heavenly government — a real ruling authority that will bring lasting peace, health, justice, and happiness to the earth. Jesus taught his followers to pray for this Kingdom (Matthew 6:9-10, commonly known as the Lord's Prayer). Jehovah's Witnesses believe this Kingdom is already in power in heaven and will soon transform the earth into a paradise as the Bible promises. This hope — grounded in specific Bible prophecies and promises — is the motivating force behind everything we do as a congregation.
